8 DOMAINS OF LIFELONG LEARNING

FUNCTIONAL ACADEMIC/ LIFE SKILL DEVELOPMENT

 

Participants receive daily instruction in functional reading, math and computer skills; with each area emphasizing skill generalization to home and community environments.

 

VOCATIONAL SKILLS

 

Opportunities for  job skills and paid employment at the center, as well as in our community.  Volunteer skill development and instilling the spirit of volunteerism.

 

MOBILITY/ COMMUNITY INTERGRATION

 

Exploring and learning to utilize community resources;  learning to access and use public transportation.  Experiencing hands-on learning through participation in community activities.  Developing independence to navigate ones community.

 

RECREATION/ LEISURE/ ARTS - COMMUNITY SERVICE

 

Exploring the arts, developing recreational and leisure interests.  Activities and interests to generalize for home.

 

PERSONAL SOCIAL COMMUNICATION AND ACCOUNTABILITY/ ADVOCACY

 

Participants and staff identify arousal levels and the ability to promote appropriate behavior in their everyday environments.  Individualized and group instruction, consultation, use of PECS and augmentative language devices and systems.  Participants develop pragmatic personal and interpersonal skills by learning to develop mature relationships with friends, family, employers, etc.

 

ATHLETICS & SPECIAL OLYMPICS

 

Participate as a member of a TEAM.  Exercise and the opportunity to train and participate in Special Olympic Athletics.

 

HEALTH/ NUTRITION

 

Participate in L.I.F.E. Healthy Living, which includes meal planning, cooking and healthy choices. Participation in DLC Plant Growth and Horticulture, Community Gardening and the Sensory Garden Trail.

 

MUSIC, MIND/ BODY WELLNESS

 

Self-esteem is the by-product of this self-expression. Through music and wellness, it is our wish to instill self-esteem and self-expression for all students here at Diamond Learning Center.
