DLC's Community Garden is an Extra
Special Sensory Garden that will grow and harvest fine motor skills while
promoting responsibility and encouraging communication and social skills.
By promoting hands on and multisensory
learning, stress, anxiety and frustrations are reduced as Students work toward
seeing the fruits of their labor bloom into real life produce. The Garden also
offers an added enhancement of promoting healthy habits and lifestyles.
Providing real-life work opportunities,
our special gardens are designed to meet multiple special needs with
accessibility and interaction key components of the layout.
WHY ARE COMMUNITY GARDENS SO
IMPORTANT?
-Gardening is a particularly interesting form of community development
which can have social, economic, environmental and political impact on a
community.
-Community gardens are vibrant centers of the community and provide
opportunities for people to get to know their neighbors and make new friends.
-Provides freshly grown vegetables, fruits and herbs for Farmers Markets
and for donations for food programs such as food banks and homeless shelters.
-The Green Space promotes livability and vitality of communities,
beautification, better air quality and cooler temperatures.
-Works with local businesses to promote "Buy Local."
